Science & Math Teacher
Joe Kovaz has found great joy in working with young people his entire life. After 13 years of traditional classroom experience teaching all levels of chemistry and physics at an urban public school in Columbia, South Carolina, Joe and his family are excited to call Maine their permanent home. Joe’s deep roots in Maine were established over 30 years ago at Pine Island Camp on Great Pond where he has worked as counselor, assistant director and year-round associate director; and more recently, he has worked as skipper, general grounds-keeper and assistant director on Whitehead Island off Spruce Head. Joe finds comfort and peace in the great outdoors where he enjoys cycling, canoeing and surfing. Joe earned a B.S. in Anthropology from the Honors College at the College of Charleston, a M.A.T. emphasizing Natural Science from the University of South Carolina, and is a National Board Certified Teacher in AYA – Science.
